Stefan Rüesch

Stefan Rüesch, born in 1963 in Lucerne, embarked on an extraordinary artistic journey that is not easily categorized. Currently residing and working in Chur, Graubünden, Rüesch’s creative odyssey began in 1983 when he first delved into the world of visual art. His pursuit of self-expression led him to engage with painting and sculpture, a path he has passionately followed since 1991. By the year 2000, Rüesch had fully embraced his artistic calling and became a freelance artist.

Rüesch’s work defies simple stylistic classification but always demonstrates his mastery of fundamental geometric shapes and figures. Straight lines, verticals, horizontals, squares, rectangles, and right angles form the basic elements of his art. Inspired by early computer graphics, he uses these elements to convey personal insights and illustrate abstract ideas.

In his works, Rüesch captures and visualizes the aesthetics of everyday life. His creative process begins with abstraction, gradually taking on a concrete form through elements such as surface, line, volume, space, and color. Rüesch’s art strikes a delicate balance between the rigor of geometry and the fluidity of human expression, resulting in a harmonious play of asymmetry.

The artist’s paintings exude proportion, balance, and serene sobriety, reflecting his ongoing journey of refinement and reinvention since the early 1990s. Rooted in simplicity and sincerity, his works transport viewers into a world of tranquility amidst the chaos of the modern world.

While he may initially be perceived as a landscape painter, Rüesch breathes new life into traditional motifs with his unique technique characterized by precise horizontal and vertical lines intersecting at right angles. His limited color palette and deliberate selection of motifs lead to compositions that are equally familiar and inspiring, evoking deep emotions and captivating the viewer’s imagination.

Stefan Rüesch’s works have earned recognition in reputable galleries and museums, including the Graubünden Art Museum in Chur, establishing him as a respected figure in contemporary art. His meticulous attention to detail and innovative approach to composition continue to captivate audiences, bridging the gap between the real and the imagined world of art.
